Although gradings are not required for students, they do provide an indication of the student’s ability to defend themselves at that time. The IKMF grading system is divided into three categories – Practitioner, Graduate and Expert level – each with 5 levels. Most Krav Maga students are ready for the Practitioner Level 1 (P1) grading after 3-6 months (mandatory minimum) and thereafter every 6 months, subject to regular and intensive training. Instructors start with Graduate Level 1 (G1), although there are Graduate level students who are not certified instructors.
Gradings for P1, P3 and P5 are conducted locally by club instructors, while national gradings for P2 and P4 and Graduate levels are conducted by Expert members of the IKMF Global Instructor Team at a location anywhere in England. Prior to gradings, it is recommended that students attend a pre-grading held by the club. Speak to your instructor to find out more.
